lyrical sculptures in kinetic metals

artist statement

I have always enjoyed watching --- looking at patterns that occur naturally. With my sculptures I seek to give visible form to an observation, a thought, an idea or a delight.  With lines of metal I create simple kinetic sculptures suspended in space; giving opportunity for pause, for personal inquiry and inspiration, a presence for reflection by others for what I see. To join our minds for a moment as you also relax into discovery of what has drawn me close as I sculpt these interactive forms.

My visual language is formed into sculptures thru minimalist lyrical softly kinetic rods of metal. They have been described as “clean lined contemporary precision touched with joy and fascination”. The pieces require thoughtful planning and forming to give them their unique balance and turning and swaying movement. The greatest enjoyment occurs when one quietly relaxes in contemplation during times of gentle breeze. My wish is to share my fascinations with others --- to bring the invisible into visible and to smile with a knowing connection.

I have been working as a Designer/Sculptor for over 40 years. With experiences gained as an industrial designer, graphic designer, environment designer and as a university design professor, I chose in 2002 to begin full time focus on creating my sculptures. In the earlier career over 150 businesses from the small entrepreneurial start up to the established Fortune 500 benefited from our collaborations. Thousands of young minds gained expanded knowledge and went on to establish successful careers from our sharing of enthusiasms during their schooling.

I have lived in many influential, beautiful and diverse areas of the country and am now residing in Western Michigan near the lakeshore. Inspiration continues to be drawn from lifelong fascination with identifying and observing visible and invisible patterns, giving form to those aaha moments. My sculptures are created to share those moments.

narrative of journey from then to sculptor

The Designer/Sculptor career began with consulting and corporate design positions creating award winning consumer products for manufacturers. This eventually transitioned into the personally satisfying design of medical diagnostic/treatment equipment which aids in improving health for individuals. Designing for business goals culminated in joining a company manufacturing sewn cases for carrying everyday electronic products.

These experiences prepared me for the present fulltime Sculptor/Artist career. Initial direction was to create wind responsive pieces using sewn fabrics in conjunction with metal sculptural forms. The temporary qualities of fabric in outside windy and intense sunlight conditions was frustrating. These early ventures occurred at a time when I was reading a book “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” by wordsmith Annie Dillard and in one chapter she describes the flowing aerobatics of a skywriting pilot. Her masterful play of words provided the aaha moment I needed to launch me into creating my soaring lyrical softly kinetic sculptures.
